Gabions is a trusted and technically sound method of retaining soil and combating soil erosion.
Gabions are rectangular woven wire baskets that can be filled with rock to form flexible, permeable structures such as retaining walls for construction, mining, industrial and road projects. They are also used for erosion protection, weir and embankment stabilization, and to create architectural and design features. They derive their strength from twisted hexagonal wire mesh reinforced by heavier gauge wire along the edges and internal diaphragms.
Gabion baskets are rectangular wire mesh cages made of twisted hexagonal wire mesh that are filled on-site with hard, durable rock to form retaining structures.
Gabions can be used in a variety of different applications, from mass gravity retaining walls in highway projects to architectural feature walls. Gabions form a flexible retaining structure that can accommodate varying settlement. They are also permeable, eliminating a major cause of instability in soil retaining structures. Gabions have also proven to provide a good balance between engineering requirements and environmental considerations for retaining walls along rivers, roads and railroads.
Gabions can be stepped, vertical or crushed to fit your project. They offer an environmentally friendly alternative with low installation costs.
Gabions are a durable and adaptable option for soil erosion and streambank stabilization projects. They have been used in Australian projects for over 50 years, with a proven track record of performance and cost effectiveness. The new polymer coatings are capable of withstanding the most demanding application conditions, including highly aggressive mechanical and chemical impacts, long-term UV radiation and low temperature effects.
To support the design of retaining walls, slopes, embankment hydraulic structures (weirs and channel liners) and rockfall protection, a suite of advanced software is available to our customers at no cost.
To assist engineers through the design process, a team of engineering experts can provide technical advice on the use of the software and provide training either in-house or through seminars.
If required, our team can also provide certified designs.
Gabions are shipped flat-packed to the site, where they are assembled, placed in place and filled with hard, durable rock. Hard, dense quarried rock in the size range of 100 mm to 250 mm is typically used to fill the gabion baskets. The modular nature of the gabion means it can be used for a large number of applications and configurations.
Our gabion walls are designed to be durable because they are flexible and can move with the earth.
